When you buy a new heating system for
your home, like a heater, heat pump or a
gas furnace, you might come across a burning smell. It’s not only the new
heating systems only. Sometimes, old heating systems can cause the then smell.
But fret not, before calling the fire brigade, read this –
Here’s what you can do when you smell the burning gas/smoke from your
heating systems –
1.
Dust & Dirt Burning Smell
This is the most common type of burning smell you get from your
new heating system or old heating systems that were shut off for a while.
What happens is – when summer starts, people turn off their heating
systems like the heater, heat pump, furnace or boiler and use their air
conditioning system.
Since the heating system is turned off and stays unused
during summer, the heat exchanger and other components of the heating system
collects dirt, dust and debris.
When the heating system is turned back on after being unused
for months, the dirt and dust on the heating system components are burned.
That’s why you smell the burning smell in your home when you turn your heating
system on for the first time in a while.
Now, what can you do when your smell dirt and dust burning
from your heating system?
At first, it is best if you can take your time to clean the
heating system before turning it on after a while. But this can’t be possible for
everyone. That’s why many HVAC experts just suggest you wait for the dirt and
dust to burn off. Once the debris is burned off, the heating system will stop
spreading the burning smell.
2.
Electrical Equipment Burning Smell
After the burning smell of dirt and dust, the electrical
equipment burning smell is the second most common smell that spreads from your heating
system.
There are three most common reasons for electrical burning
smell. First of all, the electrical burning smell can be caused by electrical wires
burning. Secondly, the blower motor can be a cause for the burning smell too. When
the blower motor is overheating, it starts spreading the burning smell.
Lastly, the heat exchanger can also cause the burning smell.
But what can you do in these situations? Well, since these are sensitive and
technical problem, it is best if you can set up an appointment
with HVAC specialists. But before calling HVAC experts, you should turn the
HVAC system off.
3.
Musty Burning Smell
The musty smell from your heating system can be caused by
the molds in duct and air filter.
The approach is very similar to the dusty burned smell.
First, wait for the molds to burn off like the dirt and dust. However, if it
still doesn’t work and the heat system keeps spreading, you need to replace your
air filter or clean it.
