Air conditioners are very prone to repair, and air conditioner repair comes to the homeowners as a surprise expense. However, if your air conditioner has a warranty, then you can avoid paying for the expense.

If your air conditioner is new, there is a high chance that it still has valid warranty. Most of the AC manufacturers offer a 5-10 years warranty and some of which offer labor warranty. But there are some hidden conditions in the warranty documents. For example, it may not cover the compressor of your air conditioner. But the compressor is a big player in an air conditioner, and when it needs repairs, you'll have to spend a significant amount of money since it is not covered by most AC companies, if not all.

In this article, I'll tell you about all the necessary information about the air conditioner warranty that you should know.

Everything You Need to Know About AC Warranty

What to Look for in an Air Conditioner Warranty

While buying an air conditioner, you'll have to know the following information:

  1. The first thing you'll have to ask the salesperson is about the duration of the AC warranty. The average lifespan of an air conditioner is 10 to 15 years. After that, your air conditioner won't function properly. Most of the manufacturers offer a 5 to 10 years AC warranty. However, some of the manufacturers may offer less or more. So before buying an air conditioner, you'll have to ask about the duration of the warranty so that you know what your AC warranty covers.
  2. Many HVAC manufacturers charge fees for warranty paperwork, and some don't. So, ask the salesperson about the charging fee.
  3. Finally, you'll have to check what can make your AC warranty void. You can find this in the legal paperwork. Most of the homeowners skip this section, and they end up violating the rules that void the AC warranty.

Air Conditioner Warranty after Moving to a New House

When you buy an air conditioner, it gets registered to your name, and when you need to use the AC warranty, you'll have to sign your name on the paper, which the manufacturer will match to the legal paperwork.

Some manufacturers don't allow AC warranty to transfer from one owner to another. As a result, when you move to a new house, you may not be able to use the AC warranty anymore. However, there are some manufacturers that allow AC warranty to transfer from one owner to another. But you'll have to change the ownership of the air conditioner warranty within a time frame. If you miss the timeframe, you may not be able to change the ownership anymore.

So, before moving to a new house, ask the previous homeowner whether you can change the ownership of AC warranty or not.

How to Check My Air Conditioner Warranty

After purchasing the air conditioner, check the manuals, and documents that you received from the store with AC. If the manufacturers offer an AC warranty, you'll find the warranty paperwork with these documents. But if you don't find any, unfortunately, your air conditioner doesn’t offer any warranty service. That's why it's better to ask the salesperson about the availability of the warranty service before buying it.

You can check your air conditioner warranty status on the manufacturer's website also. For this, you'll need a serial number that comes with the air conditioner. If you don't find any serial number on paperwork, you can find it on the body of your air conditioner. After finding the serial number, note it down, and put it into the manufacturer's website. You'll see all the warranty status, owner's name on the website.

Ways to Avoid a Void Warranty

If you don't want your air conditioner warranty to be void, you'll have to follow the terms and conditions provided by the manufacturer. If you break any terms and conditions provided by the manufacturer, your air conditioner warranty will be void, and you no longer be able to claim the warranty. Many homeowners don't read the terms and conditions and end up violating them. For example, if you install the air conditioner incorrectly, your warranty will be void. Also, if you use parts that are not approved by the manufacturer, your AC warranty will be void.

That's why it’s recommended that you should read all the terms and conditions properly before you make the purchase.
